Death of the Chairman of the Sports Council for Glasgow

It is with a great deal of regret and sadness that we must advise of the untimely death of the Chair of the Sports Council for Glasgow, Colin Atkinson.

Colin died on Monday 13th September while taking part in the Badminton Annual Golf Day in Surrey.

He was a leading light both in the Sports Council for Glasgow, and in Badminton Scotland. He had been heavily involved in volunteering in sport for more than 45 years, making a significant impact at both local and national level throughout his life.

Colin worked tirelessly to improve Sport in Scotland, and devoted a vast amount of time and energy to badminton, cricket and golf. Within badminton he provided his services for over 45 years, taking on a significant number of key roles within BADMINTONscotland, from coaching aspiring young players to managing national and international competitions hosted in Scotland.

Colin was also a keen cricket player, captaining Glasgow Accies from 1974-75 and 1981-82.

Within the Sports Council for Glasgow, Colin was a great advocate of the benefits that involvement in sport could bring to young and old alike. He was always keen to move the Sports Council forward, playing an active part on the Sports Council’s Executive Committee from 1997 - 2006, and the role of Chairman from 2007 to 2010. Colin’s contribution was acknowledged through the presentation of an award for 30 years service to sport in Glasgow on the 30th anniversary of the Sports Council in 2009.

All of the members of the Management and Executive Committees of the Sports Council for Glasgow extend our sympathy to Colin’s family.
